How To Tell If The Spider In Your Home Is Dangerous

Nebraska is home to many types of spiders. However, there are only two types of spiders in this state that can be potentially life-threatening to humans.

The black widow spider is known to cause excessive harm to you if you are bitten. The female black widow has a shiny black body with a reddish-orange marking on her abdomen that is in the shape of an hourglass. The male black widow usually has a brown body and is slightly smaller than the female. Only the female black widow spider has a dangerous bite. The venom that is injected into your body when you are bitten by a female black widow can cause you to have a fever, nausea, hallucinations, seizures, and a severe headache. If not treated, these symptoms could lead to life-threatening complications.

The brown recluse is the only other dangerous spider in Omaha. The brown recluse has a light brown body and long, thin legs. When it is fully grown, the brown recluse is about the size of a quarter. This spider is also commonly referred to as the "fiddle-back" because it has a dark marking on its back that is in the shape of a violin. If you are bitten by a brown recluse, you may notice an increase in pain at the site of the bite for the first eight hours. You could also experience a fever, chills, cold sweats, dizziness, and nausea. Sometimes, the area around the bite will start to turn pale with a blue and purple ring around it. If you notice any discoloration around the bite, it could mean that the tissue in that area is starting to die. If you think that you have been bitten by a brown recluse, you should seek medical help as soon as possible.

The black widow and brown recluse both have distinct markings that help you to identify them easily. If you see any other spider in your home, their bite is not likely to cause you any harm.

The Problem Spiders Can Create In Your Home

Even though the majority of spiders that you see in your home are harmless, they can still cause a lot of unnecessary problems, which include:
Spider bites: Most spiders can and will bite humans if they feel threatened. Even though their venom may not be poisonous to humans, it can still hurt and cause some swelling.
Cleaning more often: If you have spiders in your home, you are sure to have cobwebs. While cobwebs are essentially harmless, they are not pretty to look at. The more spiders you have in your home, the more you are going to have to clean up cobwebs.
Infestation: Spiders can reproduce quickly. If you have a few spiders in your home today, you could have a full infestation in just a matter of weeks.
Spiders like to eat insects like ants, mosquitoes, and moths. If you suddenly see spiders in your home, it could indicate that you have another infestation of the pests spiders prey on.

Five Naturally Effective Spider Prevention Tips For Around Your Home

In order to prevent spiders from entering your home, follow these five tips:

  1. Seal up any cracks or gaps that you have around your home.
  2. Keep the grass in your yard cut short.
  3. Remove all old boxes, bags, and other clutter from your home.
  4. Remove dirt and cobwebs from your home and garage.
  5. Keep all food in an airtight container so that it doesn't attract other insects that spiders like to eat.

Spiders like to live outdoors. However, if they have a consistent food and water source in your home, they will be more inclined to stay.
